Closing the Year with Clarity & Setting Yourself up for Success in 2026
As the year comes to an end, there’s a familiar pressure to rush straight into goal-setting mode. New plans. New targets. New versions of ourselves. But before we look forward, there’s real power in pausing.
Not to dwell. Not to judge. But to take stock of what worked, what didn’t, and what this year quietly taught us about how we work, create, and live.
Because clarity doesn’t come from doing more, it comes from noticing better. This is your invitation to slow down, reflect intentionally, and step into the new year with purpose rather than pressure.
Step One: Look Back Before You Look Ahead
Productivity isn’t just about output. It’s about alignment, how your time, energy, and attention were spent.
What Went Well This Year?
You can start with the positives, even if the year felt challenging.
Ask yourself:
What habits or routines actually supported me this year?
When did I feel most focused or energised?
What progress did I make that I’ve overlooked or under-celebrated?
Wins don’t have to be loud to be meaningful. Sometimes consistency, resilience, or simply showing up count more than visible milestones.
What Didn’t Work So Well?
This isn’t about failure; it’s about feedback and lessons learnt.
Consider:
Where did I feel stuck or overwhelmed?
What tasks or commitments drained my energy without giving much back?
Which goals remained unfinished, and why?
Be honest, but be kind. Awareness is not self-criticism; it’s self-leadership.
Lessons Learned (From Both)
The real value lives here.
Ask:
What should I repeat?
What needs adjusting?
What am I ready to let go of?
Every year leaves clues. Reflection helps you read them.
Step Two: The Keep, Stop, Start Reset
To move forward clearly, you don’t need a full reinvention, just better direction.
For instance, what are your non-negotiables? Write down your 3 X 3 right now, using the prompts below to guide your draft, even if it's just on a sticky note for now.
✅ Three Things to CONTINUE
These are the habits, boundaries, or systems that worked.
Morning routines
Weekly planning
Saying no more often
Protecting focused work time
Keep what supports you.
⛔ Three Things to STOP
These are the quiet saboteurs.
Overcommitting
Multitasking
Comparing your pace to others
Chasing every opportunity instead of the right ones
Stopping is a productivity skill.
➕ Three Things to START
Choose small, intentional changes.
One new habit
One clearer boundary
One system that reduces friction
Momentum comes from simplicity, not overload.
Step Three: Setting Intentional Goals for the Year Ahead
Now: it’s time to look forward.
But instead of asking “What should I achieve?”, ask:
What do I want more of?
What kind of year am I trying to create?
What matters in this current season of my life?
A few reminders as you set your goals:
Fewer goals create deeper focus
Direction matters more than speed
Goals should reflect who you are becoming, not who you think you should be
If it helps, aim for:
One core priority per quarter
Clear intentions rather than rigid expectations
Progress you can sustain
Step Four: Accountability Turns Intention Into Action
Reflection without follow-through stays theoretical. Accountability doesn’t have to be heavy or public. It can be:
Writing your goals down
Monthly personal check-ins
A trusted friend, journal, or simple planning ritual
Accountability isn’t pressure. It’s a form of self-respect, a commitment to honour the time and energy you invest in yourself.
Studies show we are significantly more likely to achieve goals when they are written down and shared with a peer. By being accountable, you aren’t just "checking a box"; you are bridging the gap between a wish and reality.
A Gentle Close to the Year
As this year draws to a close, remember that rest is not a reward; it is a requirement.
The work can wait. The emails can wait. The planning, the building, and the constant drive to optimise can all sit quietly for a moment. The world will not stop just because you do. So, here is my wish for you: Put down the pen and close the tabs. Be present with the people who matter. Lean into the slow mornings and the small, unoptimised joys.
Life is short, and productivity is just a tool to make it better. Don’t get so busy building a future that you forget to actually inhabit your present. The new year doesn’t require a perfect plan or a dramatic transformation. It simply asks for clarity, intention, and the willingness to begin again, calmly and consciously.
Wishing you a peaceful festive season, time to truly recharge, and a fresh, grounded start to 2026.
Season’s greetings, and here’s to moving forward with clarity. 🌿
